2008 national casa
conference
Each year CASAs for Children and the Office of Public Advocacy team
up to send volunteers to the annual National CASA conference.
Congratulations go out this year to
Stephanie Schulling
and
Sylvia Berg, the
lucky CASA volunteers who won a free trip to attend the
2008 conference June 7-10th in Washington DC.
Stephanie and Sylvia, along
with over 1400 other child advocates, judges, CASA staff and board
members, will enjoy 3 days of informative workshops, amazing plenary
sessions, and lots of opportunities to network with CASA volunteers
from around the country. Check back here later this summer to hear
from Stephanie and Sylvia about their conference experience. And
plan ahead: the 2009 National CASA Conference will be held in
Denver, CO April 25-28th.

CASAs
for Children 12th Annual Quilt Auction
CASAs for
Children 12th Annual Silent Quilt Auction was held on Saturday,
November 17, 1007, at the ConocoPhillips Atrium. We are very
grateful for the over 300 people who were able to find a parking
place downtown and attend the event! Once again, the crowd was
entertained by the wonderful voices of Sally’s Kitchen and by
the fabulous folk and bluegrass sounds of Asteroids.
There were 180
quilts donated to this year’s auction by 104 quilters throughout
many communities in Alaska and many of the Lower 48 states as well.
At the end of the day, $25,919 was raised from the
auction of
the quilts, CASA merchandise sales, cash donations, and raffle ticket
sales.
Speaking of the
raffle quilt – 2,300 tickets were sold this year for the full-size
Alaska Bloom Quilt made by our Quilt Auction Organizer, D
ebby
Hudson, and machine quilted by Maria C. Shell. Once again, our
special friend Amber Jones drew the winning ticket for us. The
smile and shocked look on Amber’s face as she drew the ticket said
it all – she had drawn her own mother’s name. Tara Jones won the
raffle quilt this year. Tara is an avid supporter of CASAs for
Children and has donated 19 quilts to the auction over the past 12
years. Tara and her husband Michael have been foster parents in the
past and, in fact, were the foster parents on one of Debby Hudson’s
CASA cases in 1994. All in attendance were in agreement that the
quilt has gone to a good home and to an incredibly deserving
individual. View
pictures.

go to all the quilters, the auction
helpers, and the members of our community that attend this event
each year. Next year’s auction will be held on Saturday,
November 22, 2008.
Debby Hudson accepts quilts anytime throughout the year. You
may contact her at 337-7900 or by
email.
Facing Foster Care in Alaska
Facing Foster Care in
Alaska (FFCA) is a group of current foster youth and
alumni that has formed to make improvements to the
foster care system in Alaska.
Guidelines for

and older, are eligible. Youth must be in good standing
at school and/or work, must be willing to participate in
the advisory board, and must want to work on improving
the foster care system for others.
Alumni are those
youth ages 18-24 and currently out of care who were in
legal out-of-home placement through the Office of
Children’s Services sometime during their youth.
Members meet quarterly in their regions.
If you
know of a youth/alumni who may be interested in joining
FFCA, s/he should contact Amanda Metivier at
